Style influances

Chronicle: The majority of the film is filmed using a hand held camera, giving the film a more personal feel and creating believable and emotional scenes where there is little action. The key scenes of the film had a slight blue filter

Cloverfield: Another film made mostly by handheld, as with Chronicle it is made obvious as to why the film is being made in this style. The film is set mainly at night, this then builds tension in the more dramatic scenes of the film. Similar to Chronicle the film has a yellow tinge to the major scenes, this may be due to the new york street lights. The cene in the subway created tension as the character continues filming, as an audience we can still hear the sounds of the chaos above knowing that sooner or later the characters will have to go back up.

The Thing (2011): As with the original, throughout the film people are constantly opening and closing doors (though not as much as the original). This is a subtle as it is effective

Silent Hill: There is a eerie contrast between the ash white town and the rusted, blood soaked walls of the hellish maze. the background music is often no more than an eerie moan or repetative, mechanical bang.  

28 days later: The film quality makes the film look older than it is, creating a dated feel to the film.

Many films have a dominant colour in some cases the dominant colour was not intended also most of the films are not horror films in the same sense as Saw for example. One example that works against the lack of horror is Silent Hill, based on Capcom’s bestselling video game, the film makers created a film that stayed true to the original game by creating the monotone environment, generic music and horror though at the same time still keeping with conventions of survival horror: dark rooms; the feeling of isolation and foreboding.

The soundtracks for these films are often subtle or not there at all for example the many viewers of The Walking dead may not have noticed the soundtrack in the first episode in their first viewing.

Planning the main task

The primary task involves directing and producing the first two minutes of a film and as I was unable to continue with the final editing stages for the preliminary task I decided to begin work on the primary task.

Crossed is a comic series that breaks away from the tradtional zombie survival horror, the infected know what they are doing and often enjoy it.

Genre: Post apocalypse/ survival horror/ supernatural horror.

Target audience: Teens and male young adults, fans of gritty survival horror such as Crossed, the Walking dead, The Divide and The road.

Plot: The world is gone, all that remains is a hellish nightmare. People cling to what life they have left while bandits and gangs pillage everything else. For many the only way to keep moving is to log everything, just as a reminder that we are still who we say we are…

We discovered one of these video logs but it’s contents went beyond daily life, bandits and banter… something that may change life forever for better or worse…

People begin to change, families slaughter each other, lovers become murderers, people who even in this world have never fired a weapon in their lives do unthinkable things.  

The opening scene: a group of friends search an abandoned building, gathering supplies, it is dark an there is no power, as they turn to leave they begin hearing strange sounds, scratching, knocking, voices. From there things take a harrowing turn for the worse. There is something at the door and isn’t a friendly face…
